FAQs

At Lof, we believe in doing things thoughtfully — from the materials we choose to the way we deliver each piece. Below you’ll find answers to some of the most common questions about our lights, materials, and process.

Shipping & Delivery

When will my order ship?

At Lof, we work to a slower rhythm. Orders are packed with care in our Waiheke Island studio and shipped once a week, on Wednesdays. This steady pace helps us reduce emissions, minimise waste, and stay aligned with our values of considered making.

Where do you ship to?

We currently ship across New Zealand and Australia. For other destinations, please email us at kiaora@lof.nz — we’ll explore options for you on a case-by-case basis.

What are your shipping rates?

  • New Zealand: Flat rate $45 NZD per order, sent via tracked NZ Post Courier.

  • Australia: Flat rate $100 NZD per order. Tracked delivery via NZ Post / Australia Post takes approximately 2–6 working days.

For Australian orders over AUD $1,000, 10 % GST applies at customs. We provide a commercial invoice and certificate of origin for duty-free entry under the Australia–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement.

Trade orders are charged shipping at cost, based on size, volume, and destination.

Can I request urgent delivery?

Materials & Care

How do I care for my Wool Hoop?

Caring for wool is simpler than you might think. Each fibre is coated in natural lanolin, helping to repel dust, dirt, and moisture. Most of the time, all your light needs is a gentle airing. If it needs a refresh, treat it as you would a delicate hand-knitted sweater — handle with care, and it will keep softening your space for years to come.

A few simple rituals:

  • Steam — A quick steam will ease out creases. No steamer? Use your iron’s steam function or let gravity do its work.

  • Cool light — Always use an LED bulb to avoid heat damage.

  • Gentle clean — Spot clean or lightly vacuum with a soft brush.

  • For marks — Blot with a damp cloth and mild wool detergent.

  • Deep clean — Unclip the shade, keep the wire rings in place, and handwash in cold water (your shower or bath works well). Rinse at the same temperature and air dry without stretching.
Avoid bleach, harsh chemicals, or prolonged sunlight.

Will the natural white get dirty?

Surprisingly, no. Wool naturally repels dirt and dust. Thanks to its lanolin coating, it resists stains far better than cotton or linen.

Is wool UV-sensitive?

Like all natural fibres, wool can fade over time under strong UV light. A little sunlight is great for refreshing it, but avoid placing your light in areas of harsh, prolonged sun.
Protecting from direct UV helps it age beautifully — just like any well-loved natural material.

Lighting & Installation

Each space has its own rhythm — height, light, and proportion all play a part. Here’s a guide to help you find the perfect fit:

  • Low ceilings: Choose the Wool Hoop 40 or 60 with a shorter cord for balance and headroom.

  • High ceilings or large spaces: The Wool Hoop 60L, or make a statement with a sculptural cluster — the Open Space Trio.

  • Bedrooms: The Wool Hoop 40 or 60 works beautifully as a main light, while the 15 adds a soft, ambient glow beside the bed.

  • Dining tables: The 40 suits smaller tables (2–4 seats); for larger settings (6–8+), choose the 60/60L, or create impact with a cluster of 25s.

  • Stairwells: Try the Lofty Trio to emphasise the vertical height, or mix sizes — the Open Space Trio — at varied heights to create sculptural movement.

  • Bars or benches: A linear row of 15s or 40s, or a cluster of two or three, brings intimacy and warmth. A duo of 40 and 60 also creates a refined architectural statement.

How do I install my light?

Installation should be carried out by a registered electrician. Clear instructions are included with every light.

What kind of bulb should I use?

We recommend warm, frosted LED bulbs for a soft glow.

  • WH15: Medium-length tube bulb

  • WH25: Long tube bulb

  • WH40: 95 mm globe bulb

  • WH60 / 60L: 125 mm round bulb

We prefer classic bulb shapes that use the latest LED technology — energy-efficient, warm, and timeless. Ideal spec: 8 W LED, 2700-3000K colour temperature (warm white), 350–800 lumens.

Are Lof lights fire safe?

Yes. Wool is naturally fire-retardant up to ~600 °C. All electrical components are UL-certified and independently tested for safety.

About Lof

What makes your lighting different?

Each Lof light connects material, craft, and place. Made from regenerative New Zealand wool, our lights bring acoustic comfort, natural warmth, and a softness that transforms spaces. Our design philosophy follows the Aotearoa tradition of doing more with less — creating purposeful beauty through simplicity, ingenuity, and respect for materials. We design products that restore rather than deplete, made to last and made with care.

Why wool?

Wool is one of nature’s most circular fibres — renewable, biodegradable, and grown abundantly in Aotearoa. We source directly from Palliser Ridge Farm in the Wairarapa, where the wool is grown regeneratively and the farmers are paid fairly.
Each light celebrates that connection — from farm to studio, fibre to form.

What is your design philosophy?

We believe good design is quietly radical: circular, local, and made to last.
Every Lof product is crafted with intention — to honour the material, support the maker, and light spaces with warmth and integrity.
